A 102-year-old great-grandfather has died after an alleged assault at The Crow's Nest pub in Cwmbran, south Wales. Phillip Ormerod was taken to hospital in a critical condition on August 1 following the incident. Gwent Police confirmed his death on Thursday, August 13.

Phillip Ormerod's son, Robert Ormerod, described his father as a "pub character" who was a regular at the establishment. The elder Mr. Ormerod had been diagnosed with dementia and was a widower who lived alone.

"I feel sad - even though he could be difficult because of his age and dementia, still, you get used to him being around," Robert Ormerod stated. He added that his father, a widower for 40 years, had a career as a design draftsman and had lived in the same home since 1960.

Police arrested a 56-year-old man from Llanelli on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He remains under investigation. The force is appealing for witnesses who were at the pub between 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM on the night of the incident to come forward.

Det Ch Insp Shelley Comley, the senior investigating officer, acknowledged public interest but stressed the ongoing criminal investigation and the family's grief. "We want to remind people that, not only is this an active criminal investigation, but there is a family at the heart of it processing the loss of a loved one," she said.

Robert Ormerod noted that his father walked to the pub two or three times a week and was often seen as a character due to his age. He mentioned that his father's eyesight had deteriorated and he had been diagnosed with dementia a few years prior.

The incident occurred around 10:25 PM on August 1, prompting a response from emergency services. The family expressed their hope for "some justice" following the tragedy.
