Frontline activists and leaders in the global fight against female genital mutilation (FGM) have welcomed the launch of an unprecedented $15.5 million fund designed to create "unstoppable momentum" towards ending the practice. The initiative, known as the Her Horizon Fund, aims to pool a total of $100 million from donors to reach a "tipping point" for the elimination of FGM within a generation.

The launch of this significant fund arrives at a critical juncture, as women's rights face increasing challenges and donor funding for anti-FGM initiatives, particularly those led by survivors in local communities, is in sharp decline. This philanthropic contribution is believed to be the largest single donation dedicated to ending FGM.

The Her Horizon Fund was seeded with $14 million from the Wallace Global Fund, supplemented by an additional $1.5 million from an anonymous donor. The fund's establishment addresses a concerning trend in FGM funding; the UN's joint programme in 18 countries, operated by UNFPA and Unicef, saw its funding fall by 45% last year, from $29.6 million to $16.3 million.

Experts and activists hope this substantial new funding will help counteract the declining financial support and challenges to legal protections, which are hindering progress towards the United Nations' goal of eliminating FGM by 2030. The current trajectory indicates that this goal is not on track to be met.

Ifrah Ahmed, a Somali-Irish activist and FGM survivor who founded the Ifrah Foundation to combat the practice in Somalia, expressed optimism about the fund's potential. She noted that the $14 million contribution from the Wallace Global Fund will be crucial in enabling activists to continue their vital work. Ahmed shared that her own organization, which previously received $300,000 in UN funding that was cut last year, had to secure alternative financial support.

The Ifrah Foundation has been instrumental in advocating for anti-FGM legislation in Somalia, a country where the practice is nearly universal. The new fund aims to empower similar grassroots efforts and provide sustained financial backing to organizations working directly within affected communities.

The establishment of the Her Horizon Fund by the US-based Wallace Global Fund signifies a significant philanthropic commitment to a cause that impacts an estimated 230 million women and girls globally. The initiative's ambitious goal is to mobilize further resources and create a lasting impact.
