Afghan boxer Sharif Ahmadzai, 26, has been arrested in Greece in connection with the death of Scottish aid worker Elisabeth Jane Ross, 38. Ross's body was discovered in a suitcase within an abandoned building in Athens' Kypseli district on July 18, several days after she was reported missing.

Ahmadzai, who arrived in Greece as a refugee, is a celebrated boxer who has posted about his athletic achievements on social media. He is expected to appear in court in Athens on Wednesday. The BBC understands that Ahmadzai, who left Afghanistan after being orphaned at 15, lives in Greece with his American wife and child.

According to reports, Ahmadzai had a key to the apartment where Elisabeth Ross was staying. Police have reportedly verified footage that appears to show him carrying a suitcase believed to contain her body. Furthermore, a location-sharing app used by Ahmadzai's wife indicated his presence at the building where the body was found in the days prior.

Authorities also stated that the arrested man had used Ross's bank cards to withdraw money. The building where her body was discovered is located approximately 20 minutes from where Ross had been staying. Flowers have been laid at the scene, with tributes expressing sympathy and respect for the deceased.

During searches of Ahmadzai's home, officers reportedly seized a replica pistol and a knife. A toxicology report is being expedited to determine the cause of death. Police are also working to identify and locate Ross's American friends, whom she had intended to meet in Kypseli.

Ahmadzai's personal history includes traveling to Greece via Iran and Turkey after his father, an Afghan army commander, was killed, and his mother and siblings died in a suicide bombing in Kabul. He reportedly met his wife at a refugee camp on the island of Lesbos, where he also converted to Christianity.

Together, Ahmadzai and his wife established the charity Love Every Nation Athens, an organization aimed at assisting other refugees. It is believed that Ross may have been acquainted with Ahmadzai through this charity.

Elisabeth Jane Ross, known to friends and family as Lisa, arrived in Greece on June 26 and stayed in the Kerasini area of Piraeus until July 10. She informed Greek friends of her plans to visit Kypseli to meet American friends on July 15, the same day she was last in contact with them.
