Airtel Money, the mobile money division of Airtel Africa, is preparing for a significant initial public offering (IPO) on the London Stock Exchange, a move anticipated to be one of the largest listings in years and a potential uplift for the UK's flagging stock market.

The company is reportedly seeking to raise approximately $800 million (around £601 million) through the IPO, with ambitions for a valuation ranging between $8 billion and $9 billion. This potential valuation would position it as a major listing in London, which has experienced a notable number of companies delisting in recent times.

Airtel Money boasts a substantial user base, serving 53 million active monthly users across 13 sub-Saharan African nations, including Uganda, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The business facilitates essential financial services such as mobile money loading, cash withdrawals, and other money management solutions through its extensive network of branches and kiosks.

In the last financial year, Airtel Money generated revenues approaching $1.4 billion. Its parent company, Airtel Africa, is a telecommunications provider and a part of the Indian conglomerate Bharti Enterprises. Bharti Enterprises is ultimately controlled by billionaire Sunil Bharti Mittal. While Airtel Africa is already a constituent of the FTSE 100 index, the decision has been made to list Airtel Money as a separate entity.

Ian Ferrao, the chief executive of Airtel Money, stated that the listing would provide the company with future flexibility. He explained that various exchanges were considered, including those in the Middle East, Europe, and North America, but London was ultimately chosen by shareholders. Ferrao expressed confidence in the availability of deep capital in London and the presence of global institutional investors.

Ferrao further emphasized that London's position as a hub for global institutional investors was a key factor in the decision. The company believes that London's financial ecosystem offers the necessary depth of capital to support its growth ambitions and provide a suitable platform for its public debut.

The move by Airtel Money is seen as a significant development for the London Stock Exchange, which has been seeking to attract major listings to counter recent departures. A successful IPO of this scale could signal renewed investor confidence in the UK market and encourage other companies to consider London for their public offerings.

Further details regarding the timeline and specifics of the IPO are expected to be released as the process progresses. The company's performance and the broader market conditions will likely play a crucial role in the success of this highly anticipated flotation.
