The highly anticipated world title fight between boxing stars Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Christian M’billi is confirmed to proceed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on October 31. This announcement comes despite recent deadly attacks on the country’s airports, raising security concerns.

The bout is a significant event in the boxing calendar, with Alvarez, a multi-weight world champion, set to face WBC super-middleweight champion M’billi. The decision to hold the fight in the Saudi capital, which has faced repeated attacks, was confirmed by Saudi sports promoter Turki Al-Sheikh.

Al-Sheikh stated that Alvarez himself expressed his determination to fight in Riyadh regardless of ongoing events. "Canelo reached out and told me he’ll still fight in Riyadh this October, no matter what happens," Al-Sheikh shared on social media, adding that the Mexican boxer "fears nothing."

These assurances follow two days of significant security incidents. On Sunday, one person was killed and 11 injured when a projectile hit King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. This attack occurred just a day after a Houthi strike on the same airport on Saturday, which resulted in 13 fatalities and over 300 injuries, marking the deadliest assault on Saudi Arabia in over a decade.

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for four previous strikes on Saudi airports. The group has not yet claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack. The upcoming fight was originally scheduled for October 31, and despite these security challenges, organizers appear committed to proceeding as planned.

Alvarez, a former two-time undisputed super-middleweight champion, has not competed since his September 2025 defeat to Terence Crawford. This bout against M’billi represents a key return to the ring for the Mexican star.

Saudi Arabia has been increasingly active in hosting major sporting events, aiming to diversify its economy and enhance its global profile. The commitment to proceeding with high-profile events like the Alvarez vs. M’billi fight underscores this ambition, even in the face of regional security tensions.

Questions remain about the precise security measures that will be in place for the event and the broader implications of continuing with such a high-profile international gathering amidst ongoing conflict in the region.
