Andres Manuel Lopez Beltran, the son of former Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has publicly accused the United States of revoking his visa, alleging the action is politically motivated.

Lopez Beltran made the accusation in a letter addressed to US President Donald Trump and posted on social media late on Thursday. The US State Department has not yet confirmed or commented on the visa revocation.

In his public letter, Lopez Beltran identified US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his deputy, Christopher Landau, as the officials he believes ordered the cancellation of his visa. He stated that there was no justification for such an action and that these officials lacked any evidence of wrongdoing on his part.

The alleged visa revocation comes amid a broader US effort to crack down on Mexican politicians suspected of having ties to drug cartels. This trend has seen several Mexican officials, regardless of their political affiliation, have their visas cancelled by the Trump administration.

The 39-year-old Lopez Beltran is a notable figure in Mexican politics. He recently stepped down from leading the left-wing Morena party, which was founded by his father, who served as Mexico's president from 2018 to 2024. The current president, Claudia Sheinbaum, is also from the Morena party.

Lopez Beltran is reportedly planning to run for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies next year. During his father's presidency, he largely focused on his chocolate business, though he was elected Morena's secretary of organisation in September 2024.

In his letter, Lopez Beltran described the visa revocation as a "crude and perverse act," asserting that US officials unfairly label Mexican politicians as "communists," "threats to US security," or "narco-terrorists."

President Claudia Sheinbaum commented on the situation, stating on Friday that she was unaware of any Mexican prosecutorial investigations into Lopez Beltran. She characterized the alleged action as "interference in Mexican politics" and saw no other explanation for it. Sheinbaum has maintained a balanced stance, pledging cooperation with the US on cartel issues while also emphasizing the protection of Mexico's sovereignty.
