A devastating fire followed by a violent stampede has claimed the lives of at least 24 people, including primary school students, in the rebel-held city of Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dunia Masumbuko Bwenge, the vice governor of South Kivu appointed by the AFC/M23 movement, provided a grim toll of 24 deaths—19 girls and five boys—and reported 29 others injured. Christophe Zigashane, a nurse at a local clinic, confirmed treating around 50 students and teachers, many in critical condition due to asphyxia. He stated that at least 14 children under 10 years old were among the fatalities recorded at the clinic.

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but initial reports suggest the blaze ravaged between 300 and 500 homes in addition to the schools and a clinic. The cause of the fire remains undetermined. Several individuals were treated for smoke inhalation, with some remaining in critical condition.
