At least 27 people have died in a fire that engulfed a popular bar in Bangkok, Thailand, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced Monday.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao in the Chatuchak district shortly after midnight local time. Patrons were seen fleeing the venue through the main entrance as flames erupted, with some footage showing individuals engulfed in fire as they escaped.

Prime Minister Charnvirakul confirmed that 27 bodies had been recovered from the scene, with many more injured individuals receiving hospital treatment. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the prime minister indicated that a musician performing at the time reported an issue with an electrical cut-out switch, after which the fire spread rapidly.

Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt suggested that highly flammable interior decorations likely contributed to the swift escalation of the fire. He also noted initial reports that merchandise stalls might have obstructed fire exits, though he stressed that a thorough forensic investigation is required.

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within approximately 30 minutes. However, the aftermath revealed extensive damage, with blackened walls, ceilings, and furniture. Reports indicated that the deceased comprised nine men and 18 women. Over 60 people were taken to hospitals, and a number of individuals were still reported missing by local media.

Eyewitness accounts and footage from the scene depicted a chaotic escape, with some victims attempting to hide in restrooms where many bodies were later discovered. A passing driver reportedly alerted authorities after seeing the venue ablaze and assisted in the rescue of two individuals by breaking windows.

The Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar is described as a well-liked restaurant and entertainment spot in the Chatuchak district. Pictures from after the fire showed rows of body bags lined up outside the establishment and a large police cordon.
