Billionaire Leon Black has filed a lawsuit against a United States House of Representatives committee that is investigating convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his associates. The suit was filed on Thursday, the same day Black failed to appear for a scheduled deposition with the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Black, a prominent figure and former CEO of Apollo Global Management, has been scrutinized due to his past connections with Epstein. The committee has been examining the influential social circle surrounding the disgraced financier, who died in a Manhattan detention facility in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.

Black’s legal team stated that the committee’s investigation constitutes a “fishing expedition” that exceeds its authority. His lawyer, Susan Estrich, argued that the panel's actions are no longer aimed at uncovering the truth about Epstein but rather at damaging Black’s reputation. The committee had previously issued two subpoenas to Black, including one demanding documents related to his relationship with Epstein and another requiring his testimony.

Following Black’s failure to appear for his deposition, Representative Robert Garcia, the ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee, urged Congress to immediately hold Black in contempt. Contempt of Congress proceedings typically involve a vote by the full House, and if passed, the citation is forwarded to federal prosecutors for potential indictment.

The lawsuit seeks to quash the subpoenas, which Black’s legal team contends are overly broad and burdensome.
