A 16-year-old boy and an 80-year-old man have died following a light aircraft crash near Loch Lomond. Emergency services were alerted to the incident near Drymen in Stirling at approximately 16:45 on Friday. Both individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene, and their next of kin have been informed, according to police.

Temporary airspace restrictions have been implemented in the vicinity of the crash site to facilitate the ongoing investigation by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). The AAIB has confirmed that a team has been dispatched to the location to gather evidence as part of their safety inquiry.

Police officers were present at the scene near Old Drymen Road on Saturday morning, with a gate leading to the hill where the crash occurred cordoned off. A police van and a team of officers were observed heading towards the site on Saturday.

The aircraft involved, a Piper Tomahawk II, is registered to Leading Edge Flight Training in Renfrew. It departed from Glasgow Airport at 16:17 on Friday and ceased transmitting its location at 16:37, a few miles north-east of Drymen.

Earlier on Friday, the aircraft had taken off from Cumbernauld Airport at 11:46, flying to Glasgow Airport. It remained there until around 13:00 before undertaking a two-hour flight to Newport on Tay. The plane then returned to Glasgow Airport, where it was on the ground for just over an hour prior to its final flight.

Gavin Birch-Williams, managing director of Glasgow Airport, stated that the airport is aware of the incident and offered "heartfelt sympathies" to the affected families. He described the event as "deeply tragic."

A resident of Drymen, Colin Cameron, reported seeing a significant emergency service presence, including police, ambulances, a serious incident unit, specialist fire engines, and two helicopters, indicating a major incident was underway. He only learned on Saturday morning that it was a light aircraft crash, which he found "awful."

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch continues its work to determine the cause of the crash, while authorities have secured the scene. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
