University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday has resigned with immediate effect, stating that stepping away is the only way to end a difficult chapter.

The resignation comes after the university launched an investigation into allegations concerning Arday's academic qualifications and honorary appointments. These concerns were amplified by claims of plagiarism in his work.

Arday acknowledged errors in his academic output but maintained he is not a liar. He expressed that the "unrelenting level of public scrutiny and personal attack" had taken a significant personal toll. He stated his resignation was for his own well-being, his family, and those who have supported him.

The implications of his departure are significant for the University of Cambridge, particularly in light of Arday's previous appointment as its youngest-ever Black professor. The plagiarism allegations were initially brought forward by academic Nathan Cofnas, who was previously dismissed from a Cambridge role. Cofnas claimed to have used plagiarism detection software on Arday's work, finding numerous passages with minimal edits, some retaining errors from original sources. Cofnas's own views on race and meritocracy had previously caused controversy.

In response to the accusations, Arday admitted to mistakes but denied being a liar. He described a "well-orchestrated and co-ordinated campaign" against him since his arrival at Cambridge.
