Singer Ed Sheeran publicly addressed the controversy surrounding his tour's handling of political statements, admitting to making "mistakes" during a solo show in Philadelphia.

Sheeran responded to the fallout from rapper Macklemore being dropped from the tour after making pro-Palestinian remarks on stage earlier in September. The incident had led to several artists departing the tour, a drop in ticket prices, and declining sales for the remaining US leg of his Loop Tour.

"I never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about free speech and the most complex political issue on the planet," Sheeran told the audience at Saturday's concert. He described the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attacks as horrific and called the situation in Gaza unjustifiable and disproportionate, marking his first in-person remarks since the controversy began.

Sheeran stated that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by his promoters, not by him. He emphasized that his concerts have always been intended as "safe spaces for everyone" and reaffirmed his commitment to his fans, which motivated his return to the stage.

"Now, I want to address the question of where I stand in the situation in Israel and Palestine, and whether my doing this concert here tonight implies where I stand," Sheeran stated. He explained his career-long effort to avoid being a political commentator, aiming for his music and shows to promote unity and humanity rather than division and politics.

However, Sheeran acknowledged that the current situation is a humanitarian issue and that he could no longer "hide how I feel about it." He described the events of October 7, 2023, as horrific and compounding "centuries of Jewish pain." He further elaborated that "what is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate." He expressed heartbreak over the scale of devastation, the loss of civilian and children's lives, and the "systemic injustice we're seeing unfold in the West Bank."

Getting emotional, Sheeran told the concertgoers, "I am honestly so grateful that you're here tonight with me." He reiterated that the concert remained a place where "everyone is welcome and everyone here can stand beside people that have opposing views." He also voiced his disagreement with the idea of venues pre-approving content or performers, a sentiment that was met with applause from the audience.

Sheeran concluded his statement by expressing hope that his concert could serve as a gathering place for all, irrespective of their beliefs. He mentioned that he is trying to understand how to make a contribution that aids victims and that he is actively listening and learning, admitting he "do not know enough." Sheeran's remaining tour dates are scheduled across North and South America.
