A panel on the Brazilian Supreme Court has voted to convict Eduardo Bolsonaro, a federal lawmaker and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, of lobbying the United States to interfere in the trial of his father. The conviction marks the latest legal challenge for the Bolsonaro family.

Eduardo Bolsonaro's actions were deemed by the court to constitute coercion against Brazil's justice system. The ruling comes as the Bolsonaro family remains a significant force in Brazil's right-wing politics, with former President Jair Bolsonaro currently serving a prison sentence.

Three of the four justices on the panel voted to convict Eduardo Bolsonaro, sentencing him to four years and two months in prison. Justice Cristiano Zanin stated that the conduct "clearly threatened Brazilian authorities and Brazilian citizens themselves," deeming it "illegitimate and criminal."

The conviction follows accusations that Eduardo Bolsonaro led an illegal campaign to engage then-U.S. President Donald Trump and exert foreign influence to pressure Brazilian officials to dismiss the case against his father. Trump, an ally of Jair Bolsonaro, had also faced challenges to his election results.

In March 2025, Eduardo Bolsonaro had announced his intention to move to the U.S. full-time to focus on freeing his father. Prosecutors alleged this move was part of an effort to leverage U.S. influence.

In July 2025, Donald Trump imposed 50 percent tariffs on certain Brazilian products, citing Jair Bolsonaro's trial as a reason. Trump also issued an executive order sanctioning Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, accusing him of targeting political opponents and suppressing dissent.

Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence for actions related to his efforts to remain in power after the 2022 election, which prosecutors described as an attempted coup. The Bolsonaro family has characterized these legal proceedings as a political witch-hunt.

Eduardo Bolsonaro's conviction adds another layer to the ongoing legal battles faced by the former president's family, underscoring the deep political divisions within Brazil and the international dimensions of these cases.
