Shurouq Khaira, a 24-year-old former national track champion, embodied the aspirations of many in Gaza before the war. Her dream was to represent Palestine on the international stage, showcasing the resilience and ambition of her people. This vision was irrevocably altered on November 19, 2023, when an Israeli attack on her family home in Gaza City resulted in the amputation of her right leg below the knee.

The aftermath of her injury has plunged Shurouq into a daily struggle for basic independence. Forced to live in a tent due to the destruction of her home and reconstruction restrictions, nights are particularly arduous. The lack of light and the difficulty of navigating with crutches in the dark leave her feeling trapped and fearful of falling. Outside, the rubble-strewn streets necessitate hopping on one leg, a constant reminder of her loss.

Shurouq's experience highlights the broader implications for Gaza's amputee population. The scarcity of resources, coupled with the ongoing blockade, severely limits access to essential medical care, rehabilitation, and the prosthetics needed to regain a semblance of mobility. "I live between pain, fear, darkness, and suffering, but my heart remains patient," Shurouq shared. "This difficulty in movement will be permanent. No matter what prosthetic I get, the feeling of loss will stay with me. It affects me deeply. At times, I feel weak and cry. But there are no solutions, so I try to adapt to this painful reality."

Her journey to recovery is further complicated by the need for regular physical therapy. However, the limited and prohibitively expensive transportation options within Gaza make attending these vital appointments a significant hurdle. This logistical nightmare exacerbates the physical and emotional strain on individuals like Shurouq.

The situation reflects a systemic issue impacting countless individuals in Gaza.
