A 19-year-old gunman died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after forcing his way into Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia, on Wednesday, authorities said. The incident left one staff member with a non-life-threatening injury, who has since been treated and released.

Police were alerted to a suspicious individual on the school grounds at approximately 9:12 a.m. Wednesday. The school, which was in session, immediately implemented lockdown procedures. Waynesboro Police Chief David Shaw stated that when officers arrived, they found the suspect, identified as Anthony Ignatiadis-Isabelle, deceased in the school's library.

No students are believed to have been in the library at the time of the incident. The injured staff member was treated and released, according to Chief Shaw. Ignatiadis-Isabelle was not a student within the Waynesboro Public Schools system, according to Superintendent Jeffrey Cassell.

Authorities have not released details regarding a motive for the shooting. Police Chief Shaw indicated that there was no immediate information available about the weapon used or any connection between the suspect and the injured staff member. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Superintendent Cassell expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, "Today is the day every school system hopes they never have to deal with." He commended the swift response of the school staff and law enforcement agencies, including the Waynesboro Police Department, the Augusta County Sheriff's Office, and the Virginia State Police.

Cassell highlighted that the school's safety protocols were effective, leading to the immediate notification of law enforcement and the successful execution of lockdown procedures. He confirmed that all students and staff were safe and have since returned home to their families.

While the incident at Westwood Hills Elementary School is under investigation, the successful lockdown and rapid police response prevented further injuries. The focus remains on understanding the circumstances that led to the shooting and ensuring the long-term safety of the school community.

This event underscores the ongoing concerns regarding school safety and the preparedness of educational institutions to respond to potential threats. The cooperation between school officials and law enforcement was critical in managing the situation and ensuring the well-being of students and staff.
