A father of two has spoken out for the first time about his role in ending a deadly shooting rampage at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, last week. Kaylub Giamanco recounted how he intervened after witnessing the gunman breach the school's perimeter.

Giamanco, a carpenter and lifelong Bend resident, was driving home on October 15 when he saw an individual dressed in black, armed with a firearm, vault over the school fence. His immediate reaction was one of panic, prompting him to retrieve his own gun from his vehicle's center console.

He described hearing children's pleas for their lives followed by gunfire as he made his way toward a classroom. Giamanco recounted crawling through the school's shattered front doors, entering a classroom where he saw a teacher struggling with the attacker. He stated that he fired upon the gunman, who was attempting to retrieve his weapon, shooting him an additional two times.

Authorities confirmed that the shooter was killed and that three students and one teacher were fatally shot. Another student and a teacher sustained injuries. Police have commended Giamanco's actions, crediting him with saving lives.

In an interview with Oregon Public Broadcasting, Giamanco expressed a profound sense of duty, stating, "I can tell you that I genuinely feel like I was supposed to be there." He reflected on the events, admitting that while he is grateful for saving children, he is also haunted by the lives he could not protect.

"I want to apologize for not saving their babies," Giamanco told OPB, his voice filled with emotion. "That's probably the biggest thing for me right now, because the gratitude for saving people's children is awesome. But there was ones that I didn't save."

Police identified the deceased gunman as a former student of the elementary school. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with officials focusing on the shooter's motives and the timeline of events that led to the tragedy.

The community of Bend is grappling with the aftermath of the shooting, with vigils and support services being offered to those affected. Giamanco's account offers a personal perspective on the harrowing moments of the attack and the courage displayed in its resolution.
