Yemen’s internationally recognized government has accused the Houthi rebel group of killing at least six people and wounding 10 others in a double-strike attack on a cargo vessel in the Bab al-Mandeb strait. The assault on the Egyptian-owned Tihamah on Tuesday marks the first reported shipping deaths linked to the Iran-aligned Houthis since the United States and Israel launched the war on Iran on February 28.

Yemen’s Transport Ministry stated that three Pakistani nationals and one Indonesian national died after the Houthis launched three ballistic missiles, igniting a fire and causing substantial damage to the ship. Yemen’s coastguard reported that a second missile was fired as rescue personnel were evacuating the deceased and injured, resulting in the deaths of at least two troops involved in the response operation.

This incident follows the collapse of a years-long truce in Yemen’s civil war, which had provided a fragile calm in the Red Sea. The breakdown of the UN-backed 2022 truce, exacerbated by a Saudi airstrike on Sanaa airport and subsequent Houthi retaliatory attacks, has seemingly emboldened the rebels to target maritime traffic.

The Houthi-run news agency Saba reported that the group had targeted a Saudi ship carrying military equipment in the Bab al-Mandeb strait, though the vessel was not named and Saudi Arabia has not yet responded. In a separate maritime incident, the US military reported firing on a cargo vessel attempting to breach its blockade of Iranian ports in the Gulf of Oman.

Yemen’s Foreign Ministry condemned the Tihamah attack, urging the international community to move beyond condemnation towards "effective and decisive action" against the Houthis. The lack of an immediate official statement from the Houthi leadership contrasts with their reported claims through their news agency.
