Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has issued an urgent call for residents along the Pacific coast to seek shelter indoors as Hurricane Simon, a powerful Category 4 storm, bears down on the region. The hurricane's intense winds, exceeding 240 km/h (150 mph), and heavy rainfall pose a significant threat to coastal communities in states including Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit, and Michoacan.

As of Sunday, the storm's eye was positioned offshore of Jalisco state. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned of potential additional rainfall between 20 to 41 cm (8 to 16 inches) across southwestern Mexico, with isolated totals possibly reaching 76 cm (30 inches) in parts of Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco through Monday. Communities in mountainous areas have been alerted to the risk of mudslides.

President Sheinbaum took to the social media platform X to advise, "With the approaching impact of Category 4 Hurricane Simon, we urge residents of coastal municipalities in Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacan to remain sheltered until authorities officially declare that the danger has passed." The hurricane's strengthening to Category 4 on Saturday marked it as a significant event in an already active Pacific hurricane season.

The potential for a direct hit is currently greatest in Cabo Corrientes, a municipality in Jalisco that protrudes into the Pacific. Mexico's National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) has placed 28 municipalities in Jalisco and Colima under its highest cyclone alert level, with an additional 93 under a high alert.

Authorities have suspended classes in the affected regions and initiated evacuation efforts. Businesses in popular tourist areas like Puerto Vallarta were seen boarding up windows and deploying sandbags to mitigate potential damage. Governor Pablo Navarro of Jalisco highlighted the severe marine conditions created by the hurricane, noting waves as high as eight meters (26 feet).

He also shared social media videos depicting storm surges inundating sidewalks and flooding local waterways, illustrating the immediate impact of the storm's proximity. The videos captured the forceful waves crashing ashore from Barra de Navidad to Puerto Vallarta.

The NHC's advisories have been central to disseminating information about the storm's path and intensity. The agency continues to monitor Simon's movement, providing updates to help coordinate emergency responses and public safety measures.

While the exact landfall remains uncertain, the immediate focus is on ensuring the safety of residents in the path of the storm, with emergency services on standby to respond to any developing situations.
