The man who attacked Democratic United States Representative Ilhan Omar at a town hall meeting in Minneapolis has been sentenced to 14 months in prison. Anthony James Kazmierczak, 55, pleaded guilty to an assault charge, admitting that his actions on January 27 were motivated by opposing political views against the congresswoman.

Kazmierczak sprayed a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar at Omar during the town hall event held in her district. The assault, captured on video, showed Kazmierczak lunging from the front row and yelling at Omar to resign and accusing her of dividing Minnesota. He was quickly subdued by Omar's security team and subsequently arrested.

Appearing before District Judge Joan N Ericksen on Thursday, Kazmierczak admitted to planning the assault. Prosecutors noted that he had texted individuals indicating his actions were premeditated and made arrangements for dog care and bail bonds prior to the incident. While he stated that his memory of the event was "fuzzy" in an earlier hearing, his intent was clear from his communications.

The attack occurred during a period of heightened political tension, as Omar had been vocal in her calls for the abolition of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. Kazmierczak's defense attorney, John Fossum, argued that his client had been struggling with alcohol abuse and mental health concerns. Fossum also suggested that Kazmierczak had not been taking his mental health medication leading up to the attack, which may have lowered his inhibitions. The government's sentencing memorandum detailed Kazmierczak's history of health issues, including Parkinson's disease diagnosed in 2022.
