India has issued a strong warning to the United States, stating that proposed tariffs on Russian oil imports could negatively affect bilateral relations between the two nations. The alert comes just after the US Congress passed a bill granting President Donald Trump enhanced authority to penalize countries purchasing Russian oil.

The legislation, approved by the US House of Representatives, aims to intensify economic pressure on Russia due to its ongoing invasion of Ukraine. It specifically targets Russia's energy and defense sectors, President Vladimir Putin, senior officials, and the "shadow fleet" of tankers used to evade Western sanctions. Crucially, the bill empowers President Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on nations like India, encouraging them to reduce their reliance on Russian oil and gas, and also allows for extended sanctions on Iran.

India's Ministry of External Affairs acknowledged the bill's passage, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens. The ministry stated that New Delhi has previously discussed the potential consequences of such measures with various US representatives. India has "very clearly articulated" the possible repercussions for the bilateral relationship and the global energy market, according to a statement.

"The Indian side has also made clear its determination to take all necessary measures to protect its trade and economic interests," the statement added. The Indian government plans to collaborate with trade and industry organizations to navigate the implications of the new legislation.

India, a significant global oil importer, stands as one of the largest purchasers of Russian oil. These imports have been vital for Russia's budget since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which led to extensive Western sanctions against Moscow.
