The Indian Premier League (IPL), the world's premier Twenty20 cricket competition, has seen its business value surge by over 11 percent to $20.6 billion this year. This marks the second consecutive year of double-digit growth for the league, according to a report by U.S.-based investment bank Houlihan Lokey.

Since its inception in 2008, the 10-team IPL has established itself as a dominant force in cricket, attracting top global talent and developing a robust commercial framework. This model integrates broadcast revenues, significant sponsorship deals, merchandise sales, and substantial franchise investments.

The league's strong financial performance is further underscored by recent high-profile ownership changes. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise was acquired for a record $1.78 billion by a consortium including Blackstone and Times of India Group. In a separate deal, the Rajasthan Royals were purchased for $1.65 billion by the Mittal family and Adar Poonawalla.

These transactions highlight the increasing investor confidence and the premium placed on established teams within the IPL. Houlihan Lokey noted that franchise valuations have hit new peaks, private capital investment has accelerated, and the league's commercial ecosystem is becoming more diverse.

Harsh Talikoti, a director at Houlihan Lokey, described the IPL as a unique intersection of sport, media, and consumer opportunities. He pointed to strong revenue visibility, efficient cost management, and a growing international audience as key factors contributing to its sustained value growth.

Talikoti added that recent deals "further demonstrate the confidence investors continue to place in the long-term value creation opportunity." The IPL's standalone brand value increased by 10.3 percent year-on-year, reaching $4.3 billion.

Currently, the most valuable franchise in the league is the reigning champion Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with an estimated brand value of $312 million. The consistent growth and high-profile investments suggest the IPL's financial trajectory remains upward, solidifying its position in the global sports and entertainment landscape.

The league's ability to consistently attract leading cricketers and its successful commercial strategies have created a highly attractive investment environment, driving its business value to unprecedented levels.
