Israeli army bulldozers have destroyed rows of olive trees in a village near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, just as Palestinian farmers were preparing for their annual harvest. The demolition in the village of Deir Nidham occurred on Monday and Tuesday, according to residents who spoke to Reuters.

Olive groves are a vital source of income and a symbol of Palestinian connection to the land. The destruction comes weeks before the traditional October harvest, significantly impacting farmers' livelihoods. This incident is part of a pattern of Israeli actions against Palestinian agricultural land.

Palestinian farmer Abd Alfattah Tamimi stated that the army destroyed olive trees on his family’s land and his neighbors’ land. He expressed resilience, saying, "They are uprooting, and we will plant again with the help of God." Another farmer, Nather Tamimi, noted the timing was intended to cause maximum economic damage, as his family typically produces about 120 drums of olive oil annually.

The Israeli military stated it was reviewing Reuters' request for comment but had not provided a response by Wednesday evening. In past instances, the Israeli army has cited security concerns, such as preventing ambushes or clearing land for military operations, as reasons for tree removal.

Palestinian human rights groups contest these justifications, arguing that the destruction deprives farmers of income and severes their ties to the land. Uprooting olive trees is viewed by many Palestinians as an attack on their heritage and presence.

Data from the Palestinian Authority’s Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission indicates that Israeli attacks on agricultural land in August affected over 21,000 trees, with nearly 19,500 of those being olive trees. The commission estimated this year's total olive production at 21,000 tonnes.

Such actions have drawn international criticism and are seen by Palestinian advocates as a systematic effort to dismantle Palestinian life and agriculture in the occupied West Bank. The destruction of olive groves is a recurring issue, often occurring before harvest seasons.
