Israeli forces carried out a significant demolition operation in the Masafer Yatta village of Khirbet al-Fakhit on Tuesday, destroying homes, livestock shelters, water infrastructure, and solar power installations. The operation occurred on the third day of the new school year in the occupied West Bank, leaving residents like 12-year-old Sundus al-Hamamdeh returning from classes to find their houses gone.

Masafer Yatta, located south of Hebron, is a region where much of the land falls under Area C of the West Bank, an area under full Israeli control regarding planning and construction. Israeli authorities state that demolitions are carried out because structures were built without permits. However, Palestinians, with support from the United Nations, argue that obtaining these permits is virtually impossible for them.

The demolitions have extended beyond residential structures, directly impacting the right to education for children in the area. On August 4, Israeli forces surrounded Shaab al-Butum school. According to Bassam Jabr, the director-general of education in Masafer Yatta, an Israeli military bulldozer demolished two rooms used by teachers and administrators, along with a storage room. The United Nations has independently documented these demolitions, with Israeli authorities citing a lack of an Israeli-issued building permit.

The main building of Shaab al-Butum school remains under a demolition order, putting the education of approximately 60 students, from kindergarten to 11th grade, at risk. Officials have appealed to Israeli courts and sought intervention from the United Nations and foreign governments, but the school's future is uncertain. The remote location of these communities makes relocating students to alternative schools extremely difficult.

Education officials have expressed deep concern over the ongoing threats to educational facilities in Masafer Yatta. The director-general of education highlighted the challenges faced by students and educators due to the constant possibility of destruction and displacement. The demolition of school rooms is seen as a direct attack on the children's right to education and their ability to pursue learning in a safe environment.

Masafer Yatta is described as a particularly targeted area within the West Bank, facing continuous actions by the Israeli military and settlers.
