An Israeli drone strike on Wednesday killed a 12-year-old child in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis city, in the southern Gaza Strip, health officials at the Nasser Medical Complex told Al Jazeera. The attack, which also wounded several others, occurred in an area designated by Israel as a "safe zone" for displaced Palestinians.

This incident underscores the continued violence in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, even as a "ceasefire" is reportedly in effect. Health officials in Gaza have consistently reported casualties resulting from Israeli attacks since the truce began in October 2025.

The child, identified as Ahmed, was killed when a tent housing displaced individuals was targeted. At least seven Palestinians were injured in the same strike. Doctors in Gaza face significant challenges treating victims due to ongoing Israeli restrictions on medical supplies entering the Strip.

Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary reported that Israeli forces also conducted another attack on the western side of Gaza on Tuesday night, indicating continued breaches of the truce. The designation of al-Mawasi as a safe zone has been repeatedly contradicted by reports of attacks in the area.

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, since the "ceasefire" took effect in October 2025, Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of at least 1,027 people and the injury of 3,280 others. The cumulative number of Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks since October 2023 has reached 73,041, with 173,402 wounded.

This killing follows a recent report by a United Nations commission of inquiry. The commission found that Israel's deliberate targeting of children is part of its ongoing actions against Palestinians in Gaza. Srinivasan Muralidhar, chair of the UN commission, stated that evidence shows Israeli forces have deliberately targeted and killed Palestinian children.

He further noted that even after the October 2025 ceasefire, children continue to be killed and injured, with Israel showing continued disregard for the truce and the protection Palestinian children are owed under international law.

In parallel to the attacks in Gaza, Israeli forces also killed a Palestinian in the town of al-Yamoun in the northern occupied West Bank on Wednesday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. The details surrounding this West Bank incident are still emerging.
