Israeli forces conducted a "large-scale" raid in the Qalandiya refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, resulting in injuries to at least 51 Palestinians, the Jerusalem Governorate informed Al Jazeera. The operation involved the demolition of commercial shops near the Qalandiya checkpoint, followed by the imposition of a curfew on the neighboring town of Kafr Aqab and the sealing of roads connecting the area to Jerusalem.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reported that 35 individuals were hospitalized due to severe beatings, while six others received treatment at the scene. One person sustained an injury from a rubber-coated steel bullet, and six others experienced tear gas inhalation. PRCS stated that its ambulance crews faced blockades in reaching the wounded from late Wednesday night, though they managed to evacuate several patients, including those requiring kidney dialysis.

During the raid, Israeli soldiers reportedly fired stun grenades at journalists stationed at the camp's entrance and instructed them to leave. Local Palestinian media reported that dozens of Palestinians, including children and women, were detained for field interrogations in homes that were temporarily converted into makeshift holding sites.

The incident in Qalandiya occurs amidst an escalating pattern of Israeli army attacks and settler violence against Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank. This increase has coincided with heightened demolitions of Palestinian property and the illegal seizure of land in recent months.

Rights groups have documented over 11,000 Israeli military and settler attacks across the West Bank in the first half of the current year alone. These actions have led to more than 2,300 Palestinians being displaced from their homes due to settler violence and associated restrictions.

A United Nations-appointed commission of inquiry concluded in June that Israeli authorities have consistently failed to prevent foreseeable settler attacks and have not adequately investigated or prosecuted those responsible. The investigators also noted that Israeli authorities, in some instances, have facilitated settler violence through military protection and the provision of weapons and funding.

Israel has also previously banned the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, from operating in occupied East Jerusalem and has demolished several of its facilities in the area, including those located near Qalandiya. The Israeli Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, has overseen civilian affairs in the occupied West Bank.

On Thursday, Israeli forces also raided the city of Jenin, leading to one Palestinian being shot and another being assaulted, according to PRCS. The full extent of damages and detentions in Qalandiya is still being assessed.
