Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand captain, has been appointed as the new head coach of the England Test cricket team, with Joe Root returning to captain the side. The announcement comes after the dismissal of previous coach Brendon McCullum earlier this month following a period of poor results.

Fleming, 53, brings extensive coaching experience from the T20 franchise circuit, most notably leading the Chennai Super Kings to five Indian Premier League titles. This marks his first national team head coaching role. Joe Root, 35, previously captained England from 2017 to 2022, achieving a record 27 Test victories in 65 matches. His return to the captaincy follows the recent international retirement of Ben Stokes.

Fleming expressed his enthusiasm for the prestigious role, stating he is honoured to be appointed. Root, meanwhile, cited Fleming's proven leadership and extensive game knowledge as a significant motivator for his own return to the captaincy. Fleming will not oversee the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, which commences on August 19. Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach for that series. Fleming is scheduled to begin his tenure officially with the South Africa Test tour in December, after taking time with his family in New Zealand.

The appointment comes at a critical juncture for the England Test team. Under the previous coaching tenure, the team experienced a dramatic shift in fortunes. While the initial phase under McCullum saw a remarkable winning streak, recent performance has faltered. England have lost 18 and won 17 of their last 37 Test matches, and have not secured a multi-match series victory since December 2024.

The decision to part ways with McCullum followed a heavy Ashes defeat in Australia and a subsequent home series loss to New Zealand, during which Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket. Root, who made his Test debut in 2012, holds numerous England batting records, including being the nation's highest Test run-scorer with 14,114 runs, placing him second only to Sachin Tendulkar in all-time Test runs.

Fleming praised Root as a "generational talent" and expressed excitement about supporting him in his second stint as captain. He aims to help Root thrive in the role under new circumstances. Gavin Hamilton, director of cricket at Yorkshire, commented that Root's presence elevates team standards.
