Karen Bass has advanced in the primary election to determine the next mayor of Los Angeles, though the identity of her opponent in the runoff election remains undetermined as votes continue to be tallied.

The primary saw voters in the nation's second-largest city choose from 14 candidates, with key issues including recovery from the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, homelessness, and immigration.

While the primary is nonpartisan, Bass, the incumbent, is a Democrat. Other notable candidates included city Councilwoman Nithya Raman, a self-described Democrat, and reality TV personality Spencer Pratt, a registered Republican.

Bass, a Los Angeles native, entered politics in 2004 after a career as a physician assistant. She served in the California State Assembly, including as speaker, before her election to Congress in 2010. She became the first woman and second African American mayor of Los Angeles in 2022.

Raman, a progressive candidate, launched her campaign earlier this year and has served on the city council since 2020. She holds degrees from Harvard and MIT and describes herself as an urban planner.

Pratt, running as an outsider, gained fame on the reality TV show "The Hills." His political ambitions were reportedly fueled by his home being claimed by the Palisades wildfire.

The most prominent issue during the campaign was the response and recovery from the early 2025 wildfires, which destroyed over 10,000 structures and burned more than 30,000 acres. Pratt emerged as a vocal critic of the city's handling of the disaster, while Bass defended her administration's actions.

Bass and Raman, along with Pratt, participated in the race's sole televised debate on May 6, highlighting their differing approaches to the city's pressing challenges.
