A guilty plea is anticipated to be announced in the federal prosecution of Luigi Mangione on Friday, according to sources familiar with the matter. The announcement is expected during a conference scheduled for federal court, with the hearing set for 11 a.m.

Mangione is accused of the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was gunned down on December 4, 2024, in Midtown Manhattan. Mangione was apprehended in Pennsylvania following a five-day manhunt.

Sources cautioned that the plans for the guilty plea are not yet final and will only become official when announced in court. The situation remains fluid, and Mangione could still decide against pleading guilty before Friday. Neither the prosecution nor the defense teams have commented on the developing situation.

This potential plea comes after significant developments in both the state and federal cases against Mangione. He had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges in both jurisdictions. The legal proceedings have seen some charges dismissed over the past year.

In January, U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett dismissed the federal murder and firearm charges, which had carried the possibility of the death penalty. In the state case, Judge Gregory Carro previously dismissed first-degree murder and terrorism charges in September.

Despite these dismissals, Mangione still faces charges in the state case, including murder in the second degree, criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, and multiple counts of weapon possession. His trial in the state case is scheduled to begin on September 8.

His federal trial had been set for January 5, but this expected guilty plea would likely resolve that case. The dismissal of the federal murder charges means that the death penalty is no longer an option for prosecutors in either the state or federal proceedings.

The indictment for first-degree murder in the state case was announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on December 17, 2024. Federal prosecutors followed with separate charges of stalking and murder on December 19, 2024.
