Popular Mexican TikTok influencer Cesar Gastelum, 24, was fatally shot by assailants on a motorbike near Culiacan while livestreaming an event for his followers on Tuesday. The incident occurred in a KFC car park in Tres Rios, Culiacan, a region known for ongoing cartel violence.

Gastelum was known for creating comedy and lifestyle content on TikTok, where he had amassed over 700,000 followers. His death highlights a disturbing trend of violence against social media influencers in Mexico, particularly in the Sinaloa region.

The attack took place around 8:15 p.m. local time. Video footage showed Gastelum laughing with two friends before two helmeted individuals on a motorcycle approached. One assailant produced a gun and shot Gastelum before they fled the scene. The two friends accompanying him were unharmed. The attackers were reportedly wearing bright orange clothing and carrying delivery bags, which initially led authorities to believe Gastelum might have been a delivery driver.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on Wednesday that authorities are actively investigating the homicide, emphasizing the need to arrest the perpetrators and uncover the motive. The Federal Security Cabinet confirmed it is analyzing Gastelum's social media posts, some of which reportedly reference a criminal group faction. Surveillance footage is also being reviewed as part of the joint investigation with the State of Sinaloa's attorney general's office.

Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state, is a focal point of violent territorial disputes between rival factions of the Sinaloa cartel. This internal conflict has intensified since the arrest of cartel co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada in July 2024, creating a power vacuum that fuels ongoing violence.

Gastelum's killing is not an isolated event. Mexican media reports indicate that at least 12 social media influencers have been killed in Culiacan since September 2024. This recent incident follows the killing of beauty influencer Valeria Marquez in the western state of Jalisco in May 2025, underscoring the perilous environment faced by content creators in certain regions of Mexico.

Authorities have not yet made any arrests or publicly confirmed a motive for Gastelum's death. The investigation is ongoing, with officials examining digital evidence and potential links to organized crime, a common factor in the region's high homicide rates.

The circumstances of the attack, particularly the involvement of individuals disguised as delivery personnel, raise questions about the perpetrators' methods and planning. The proximity of the shooting to the local prosecutor's office also adds a layer of concern regarding the security situation in the area.
