Mexican law enforcement announced the rescue of eight people who had been forcibly recruited and held by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a powerful drug trafficking organization, at a clandestine clinic. The operation took place on a farm in the municipality of Tecalitlan, located in the western state of Jalisco.

The discovery highlights the brutal tactics employed by cartels to maintain their operations. The CJNG is known for its violence and extensive reach, and this incident reveals their methods of detaining and recovering individuals involved in their illicit activities.

Images released by state prosecutors depicted grim conditions within the facility, including dimly lit rooms with mattresses on the floor and stained walls. Two of the rescued individuals were seen using crutches. Authorities reported the seizure of illegal drugs, weapons, and ammunition. Six individuals, identified as suspected guards aged between 21 and 48, were arrested at the scene.

This rescue operation was initiated following an investigation into a missing person case. Authorities were searching for a 20-year-old man who disappeared in late July after accepting what he believed to be a job offer at a farm. The discovery of the clandestine clinic is a direct result of this search.

The situation in Tecalitlan echoes previous findings in Jalisco, including the 2025 discovery of a suspected CJNG training camp. That earlier operation, conducted by a civilian search collective, uncovered evidence such as clothing, luggage, and human remains, leading to more than 40 arrests.

Mexico is grappling with a significant crisis of missing persons, with an estimated 134,000 individuals unaccounted for nationwide. Jalisco is among the states with the highest rates of disappearances, underscoring the pervasive impact of organized crime.

In response to the use of deceptive tactics, the Mexican government has been actively working to combat online recruitment schemes. Last week, authorities announced the disabling of over 1,700 social media profiles that were used to spread fake job offers, specifically targeting young people to lure them into criminal activities.

While the immediate victims have been rescued and suspects apprehended, the broader implications of such clandestine operations by powerful cartels remain a significant concern for public safety and human rights in Mexico.
