Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is demanding the immediate release of Palestinian healthcare workers detained by Israel, expressing outrage over their treatment and the "dire conditions" they face. The international medical humanitarian organization stated on Monday that these professionals are being held "without justification or cause," highlighting a pattern of targeting medical staff across Palestine.

The NGO’s call underscores the severe plight of medical personnel in detention. MSF specifically pointed to the case of Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. Dr. Abu Safia has reportedly been held in solitary confinement and subjected to torture since his detention by Israeli forces over 18 months ago. His continued imprisonment and alleged mistreatment follow what MSF describes as an "appalling pattern" by Israeli authorities.

This situation is further illuminated by reports from Physicians for Human Rights Israel, indicating that over 50 healthcare workers, including 15 doctors, are currently detained by Israel under inhumane conditions. This group has filed a petition with the Israeli Supreme Court seeking their release. Additionally, figures from Healthcare Workers Watch in April revealed that 446 Palestinian healthcare workers have been unlawfully detained since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, with six reportedly dying in detention.

MSF also called for the "immediate and unconditional release" of orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Mohammed Obeid, who has spent over 600 days imprisoned after his arrest while working at Kamal Adwan Hospital. The organization criticized the international community, stating that "for too long, too many world leaders have failed to condemn Israel’s conduct in Palestine. Silence has become complicity."

Beyond demanding release, MSF insists that all arbitrarily detained medical personnel must receive adequate medical care and be held in dignified conditions while awaiting their freedom. This advocacy aligns with recent calls from UN bodies. Earlier in July, a UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry and the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention urged Israel to release Dr. Abu Safia and all other arbitrarily detained medical personnel.

Dr. Abu Safia's lawyer, Nasser Odeh, has expressed grave concern for the doctor's health, noting signs of regular torture. Israel is holding the pediatrician under the classification of an "unlawful combatant," a designation that allows for detention without trial. Prior to his detention, Dr. Abu Safia was a vocal advocate, frequently highlighting the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict on Gaza's healthcare system.

The detention of medical professionals raises significant concerns about the preservation of healthcare services in Palestinian territories. The continued imprisonment of doctors and surgeons, particularly those in critical roles like hospital directors, directly impacts the capacity to provide essential medical care to a population already severely affected by conflict.

The international community's response, or lack thereof, to these detentions is a central point of contention for MSF and other human rights organizations. Their statements suggest a perceived failure by global leaders to hold Israel accountable for its actions, thereby enabling continued alleged abuses against medical personnel.
