Two police officers were among seven people killed in a devastating wrong-way car crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough early Saturday morning. The collision occurred at approximately 03:39 BST when a Volkswagen Passat, reportedly carrying five occupants in their late teens, struck an oncoming marked Cleveland Police vehicle.

Both the occupants of the Passat and the two officers were pronounced dead at the scene. The officers have been identified as PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38. The crash took place on the dual carriageway, a major artery through Teesside.

Chief Constable Victoria Fuller of Cleveland Police described the incident as an "incredibly sad day for Cleveland," stating that the officers were "brave officers protecting our communities." She added that the families of those involved had been informed and were receiving specialist support. Fuller conveyed her condolences and support to the families, noting the "unimaginable loss."

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Preliminary information suggests that Cleveland Police had sighted a suspicious vehicle, and a pursuit had begun before the fatal collision. The police vehicle involved was reportedly an armed response vehicle traveling on the correct side of the road.

Security footage from a nearby residence appears to show a car being pursued by police vehicles approximately three minutes before the crash. The A66 was closed in both directions for an extended period following the incident, impacting traffic through the industrial area.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed his devastation and thanked emergency services for their response in "incredibly difficult circumstances." The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that 14 ambulance resources were dispatched to the scene, and they extended condolences to all affected.
