Khalil al-Hayya, the newly appointed leader of Hamas, has delivered his first televised address, pledging to rebuild the Gaza Strip, alleviate the suffering of its people, and work towards a unified Palestinian state encompassing Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

Al-Hayya, who was selected as the head of Hamas's political bureau on Monday, replaced Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by the Israeli army in Gaza in 2024. His appointment followed a run-off vote against former political chief Khaled Meshaal. Between Sinwar's death and al-Hayya's selection, Hamas was governed by a five-man ruling council, with al-Hayya as a member.

In his address, broadcast on Hamas-run Al-Aqsa TV, al-Hayya called for an immediate and complete cessation of Israeli aggression in Gaza. He emphasized Hamas's commitment to resisting any attempts to displace Palestinians from Gaza and expressed gratitude to nations working to end the conflict. He also promised the release of political prisoners held in Israel.

The new Hamas leader reaffirmed the group's long-standing objective of establishing a Palestinian state that includes Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, with its capital in East Jerusalem. This goal aligns with the group's revised policy document from 2017. Al-Hayya specifically addressed Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank, acknowledging their struggles and the importance of these areas to the Palestinian cause.

Al-Hayya also pledged that Gaza would be rebuilt, offering "heartfelt greetings and unwavering loyalty" to the people of Gaza. He vowed that Hamas would continue its resistance, ensuring the Palestinian banner flies over Al-Aqsa Mosque and the lands of a "free and proud Palestine."
