Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust has dismissed a total of 15 staff members for inappropriately accessing the medical records of victims of the June 2023 Nottingham attacks. This figure represents an increase from the 11 dismissals announced in May.

The attacks, which occurred on June 13, 2023, resulted in the deaths of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and grandfather Ian Coates. The perpetrator, Valdo Calocane, had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020.

In addition to the dismissals, the trust has issued 15 final written warnings and two first written warnings. Two cases were closed with no further action. The affected staff included doctors, nurses, registered healthcare professionals, and other employees. The trust confirmed that independent regulators, including the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the General Medical Council, the Information Commissioner's Office, and Nottinghamshire Police, have been notified.

Dr. Manjeet Shehmar, medical director at NUH, stated that there is no justification for accessing patient records without a legitimate reason and expressed hope that these actions send a clear message. She offered her condolences to the families, acknowledging the additional pain caused by these breaches.

NUH is implementing a new system, currently undergoing testing, designed to protect patient records and alert the trust to potential breaches. A campaign titled 'Your Responsibility, Your Actions, Their Privacy' has also been launched to educate staff on data protection and the consequences of violating privacy rules.

Investigations are ongoing, including those related to the inappropriate access of records belonging to surviving victims of the attacks: Wayne Birkett, Sharon Miller, and Marcin Gawronski. The trust stated that while these actions are disappointing, they represent a small fraction of its overall workforce, and that staff are being educated on appropriate data access.

The initial dismissals were made public as a statutory public inquiry, led by a judge, examines the events leading up to the attacks and decisions made in their aftermath. The inquiry also investigates the actions taken after the fatal incidents on June 13, 2023.

NUH has reiterated its commitment to investigating all instances of inappropriate record access and taking necessary action. The trust is also focused on educating its staff and enhancing its systems to safeguard patient data, emphasizing that the vast majority of its workforce adheres to proper protocols.
