Nine people died Sunday when a Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, officials confirmed.

The aircraft went down around 12:50 p.m. EST (17:50 GMT) near Cresthaven, approximately nine miles from President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort. The jet had departed from Austin, Texas, and was en route to the Bahamas.

Images from the scene show a crater in a residential road, surrounded by debris and remnants of the fiery crash. In air traffic control audio, the pilot can be heard declaring an emergency, stating the plane was in an "overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute." The pilot reportedly told the tower, "We're gonna crash... We're out of time."

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash as "like a missile coming down, and a massive explosion, debris going everywhere." He noted that there were no initial reports of injuries or fatalities among residents on the ground. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the event a "horrific tragedy" and confirmed the FAA is sending a team to assist the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office reported that the crash occurred on Military Trail, a major thoroughfare. Approximately 600 residents from a nearby trailer park were evacuated as a precaution. The impact caused significant damage to local infrastructure, including water lines, and officials estimate the road will remain closed for at least 30 days.

Weather conditions in the area at the time of the crash included thunderstorms and heavy rain, according to local officials. The proximity to Mar-a-Lago was noted, with President Trump having departed from a nearby airport on Air Force One about an hour before the incident.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials stated they are investigating the crash. The Learjet 60 is a twin-engine business jet capable of carrying up to eight passengers plus two crew members.

Further details regarding the identities of the passengers and crew, as well as the specific cause of the emergency descent, are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
