The parents of Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old student-athlete, are calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into his mysterious death. Wells' body was recovered on July 6, days after he went missing during a Fourth of July celebration with friends on Horn Island, Mississippi.

Christine and Elmore Wonsley spoke with "Good Morning America" anchor Michael Strahan on Friday, expressing their deep desire for answers regarding their son's fate. Wells, a football player for Southwest Mississippi Community College, was last seen with high school friends on the undeveloped island.

The parents expressed skepticism about claims that Wells chose to stay behind on the island as his friends departed. "We always told him, if you go with a group, you stay with a group," Elmore Wonsley stated, struggling to comprehend why his son would have separated from his companions. Christine Wonsley added that she "can't fathom why he would."

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter assured the family and community that the investigation is ongoing and comprehensive. While he noted that initial evidence collected "yet" does not indicate foul play, he emphasized that the process requires time and thoroughness. "We're working towards the same goal as the family. We want a thorough investigation," Ledbetter said, committing to uncovering all facts.

The sheriff acknowledged the difficulty of the situation for both the family and the community. He reiterated that the primary objective is to conduct an accurate, professional, and exhaustive investigation to provide the answers the family deserves. Ledbetter also appealed to the public for patience as investigators process a "substantial amount" of tips and digital evidence.

Adding to the family's concerns, Christine Wonsley mentioned that while attempting to track her son's phone via the Life360 app, she discovered that some texts and messages, particularly from his Snapchat account, had been deleted after she obtained the phone from friends.

The investigation is actively reviewing photo and video evidence, alongside numerous tips received. Horn Island, a popular but undeveloped destination, presents unique challenges for recovery and investigation efforts.

Sheriff Ledbetter stressed the importance of community support during this trying period, stating, "Jackson County is a community that supports its people. Our community is there for the family." The family has indicated plans to conduct an independent autopsy as they continue to seek clarity on the circumstances surrounding Nolan Wells' death.
