Former professional boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33, more than 11 years after sustaining severe brain injuries during a fight that led to a lengthy coma. The Puerto Rican fighter was one of boxing's emerging talents when he collapsed after a bout in October 2015, ultimately spending 221 days in a coma.

Colon's career came to an abrupt and tragic end following a super-welterweight match against Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia. The fight was awarded to Williams in the ninth round after Colon's corner removed his gloves, with Colon having complained of dizziness during the bout. Colon had alleged that Williams had repeatedly landed illegal "rabbit punches"—blows to the back of the head—during the fight.

Following the fight, Colon experienced a subdural haematoma, necessitating emergency brain surgery. After waking from his coma, it became apparent that the damage was extensive, requiring him to need constant care for the remainder of his life. His father, Richard Colon, announced his son's passing on Facebook, stating, "Now he is in a better world."

The incident has cast a long shadow over the sport of boxing, raising persistent questions about fighter safety and the officiating of bouts. The fight between Colon and Williams, which took place when both were considered rising stars, remains a point of contention and sorrow within the boxing community.
