Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a three-hour discussion with U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Saturday regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Kremlin announced.

The meeting, held at the Kremlin in Moscow, focused on finding a political and diplomatic resolution to the protracted conflict that has lasted over four years.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov characterized the talks as "substantive, constructive, exceptionally candid, and conducted in a spirit of trust." He stated that Russia presented its comprehensive assessments of the situation surrounding its "special military operation" in Ukraine.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian officials had indicated that Witkoff and Kushner were arriving with a new ceasefire proposal from Ukraine. However, it remains unclear whether this latest offer significantly deviates from previous proposals, as Putin has consistently maintained demands for Ukrainian territory that Kyiv finds unacceptable.

Following the discussions, the Kremlin aide confirmed Putin's "intention to continue working jointly with the Americans to seek political and diplomatic solutions." Witkoff and Kushner reportedly pledged to convey Russia's observations and assessments regarding a path to a lasting peace settlement to Ukrainian officials during their planned meetings in Kyiv on Sunday.

Prior to the talks, Putin conveyed "best wishes and words of gratitude" to U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Kremlin video releases. He also acknowledged the "difficult situation" that would need to be addressed by the negotiators.

In a gesture aimed at de-escalating tensions during the U.S. envoys' visit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would refrain from targeting Moscow with drones and missiles. He also called for reciprocal action from Russia when Witkoff and Kushner are scheduled to visit Kyiv.

The U.S. delegation, led by Witkoff and including Trump's son-in-law Kushner, arrived in Moscow with the objective of facilitating peace talks, a mission that has seen previous attempts to broker a ceasefire.
