Qatar's Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has died at the age of 74, the Amiri Diwan announced on Sunday. The emir’s office stated that the nation mourns the significant loss of Sheikh Hamad, who passed away "this morning" with "hearts steadfast in faith in God’s decree and destiny."

Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, during which time he was instrumental in the energy-rich Gulf state's rapid development and transformation. His reign saw substantial economic, social, and cultural advancements that elevated Qatar's international standing.

Under his leadership, Qatar became the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, driven by major economic investments and extensive international partnerships. He also notably handed over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013, a rare abdication among hereditary Gulf Arab rulers.

The period of Sheikh Hamad's rule is widely credited with modernizing the nation and increasing its influence on the global stage. His strategic decisions laid the groundwork for Qatar's current economic and political position.

During his tenure, Sheikh Hamad engaged in numerous diplomatic efforts and met with various international leaders. These included meetings with U.S. President George W. Bush, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He also toured reconstruction efforts in Lebanon, visited Queen Elizabeth II in England, and addressed the UN Millennium Development Goals Summit.

Key moments during his rule included Qatar's successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, announced in December 2010, a significant achievement for the nation's global profile. He also met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, discussing regional and international issues.

Sheikh Hamad's decision to step aside for his son, Sheikh Tamim, who was 33 at the time, was a notable event in the region's political landscape. This transition allowed for a new generation of leadership while ensuring continuity.

The Amiri Diwan's announcement did not specify the cause of death. Sheikh Hamad leaves behind a legacy of significant national development and an expanded role for Qatar in international affairs.
