A prominent Russian expert has reportedly lost his position after issuing a stark warning about the potential for social unrest in Russia, citing the escalating civilian death toll in Ukraine and the nation's struggling economy. The expert's assessment coincided with a period of intense Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, which have resulted in record civilian casualties.

Recent Russian ballistic missile attacks have inflicted significant civilian losses in Ukrainian cities, particularly in areas lacking adequate Patriot missile defense systems. On Tuesday, at least 10 people were killed in Pechenihy, a town near Kharkiv. Further attacks on Thursday claimed 15 lives in Kyiv and three in Zhytomyr, while injuring 40 near Odesa. Russia stated its targets were weapons manufacturing sites, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported strikes on residential buildings, a school, and a children's hospital.

The United Nations documented a record 437 civilian deaths in Ukraine in July, a 30 percent increase from June, with injuries also rising sharply.
