Australian football star Sam Kerr has signed with the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) champions Gotham FC, the club announced Monday. The move marks the iconic striker's return to the US league after a highly successful six-year stint with Chelsea in England.

Kerr, who was a free agent, inked a contract that will keep her in New York through the 2030 season. She previously played in the NWSL between 2015 and 2017, establishing herself as a prolific scorer.

The signing is considered a significant coup for the NWSL, particularly as the league has seen players move to Europe in recent years. Kerr, the all-time leading regular-season goal-scorer in the NWSL, scored 116 goals across all competitions for Chelsea and was the runner-up for the 2023 Ballon d’Or.

"This club was an important part of my journey, and to come back at this moment, with everything Gotham has built, is really special," Kerr said in a statement. "The ambition here is clear, and I’m looking forward to helping this team compete for trophies and create more history."

Gotham FC president of football operations Yael Averbuch West hailed the signing as a "landmark moment." "Sam is one of the defining players of her generation and a game-changing talent who has consistently delivered at the highest levels of world football," Averbuch West stated.

Kerr's NWSL career began with Sky Blue FC (now Gotham FC) from 2015 to 2017, where she recorded 77 regular-season goals, a record that still stands despite her departure. She also played for the Chicago Red Stars and Perth Glory before joining Chelsea in late 2019.

During her time at Chelsea, Kerr won five Women's Super League titles and became a key figure for the London club. Her return to the NWSL adds significant star power to the league, which is seeking to grow its global profile.

Kerr is expected to make her debut for Gotham FC after the NWSL's transfer window opens on July 14. The team's next match is at home against the Washington Spirit on July 15 in the Queens Classic.
