Actor Sam Neill, widely recognized for his portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant in the blockbuster "Jurassic Park" film franchise, died on Monday. He was 78 years old. The announcement was made via his official social media account, which stated that Neill was surrounded by family at the time of his passing.

Neill, born Nigel John Dermot Neill on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, embarked on his acting journey later in life. After his family relocated to New Zealand when he was seven, Neill discovered acting while attending the University of Canterbury. His early career began in 1971 with a role in the New Zealand television film "The City of No."

The actor's career gained momentum with lead roles in films such as the 1977 action thriller "Sleeping Dogs." He subsequently appeared in various Australian television shows and films, including "The Sullivans" and the 1979 movies "The Journalist" and "Just Out of Reach." His international presence grew with his role as Damien Thorn in "Omen III: The Final Conflict" in 1981.

However, it was his role as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's 1993 science fiction adventure "Jurassic Park" that cemented Neill's global fame. The film, based on Michael Crichton's novel, explored a theme park populated with de-extinct dinosaurs. Neill's character was inspired by paleontologist Jack Horner.

In a 2022 interview, Neill described his character Dr. Alan Grant as "an old comfortable pair of boots," reflecting the enduring connection he felt with the role. He reprised the character in "Jurassic Park III" and "Jurassic World Dominion," experiencing the franchise's sustained cultural impact.

Neill reflected on the unexpected longevity and cultural resonance of the "Jurassic Park" franchise, stating that he never anticipated sequels or the films' lasting place in popular culture. He noted how lines from the movies and even visual gags, like his character removing dark glasses, have become widely recognized and referenced, even decades later.

Beyond "Jurassic Park," Neill also gained recognition for his role in the popular television series "Peaky Blinders." His extensive filmography showcased his versatility across various genres throughout his career.

The statement released by his social media account emphasized that while the loss was sudden and unexpected, Neill "passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life" and that he remained cancer-free, a detail shared to offer a measure of comfort to those mourning his death.
