Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has died at the age of 30, the club announced Tuesday, following a serious injury sustained during a Spanish second-division match. The forward suffered head and chest injuries during a game against FC Andorra on Monday in a collision with goalkeeper Jesus Owono.

De Miguel collapsed on the pitch after the incident, which occurred seven minutes into stoppage time with the score tied 2-2. Owono, who was sent off with a straight red card for his challenge, had come out to clear a long ball when his knee appeared to strike De Miguel. Medical staff immediately attended to the player before he was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Initially described as 'stable but serious' on Monday, De Miguel's condition deteriorated Tuesday morning, leading to his death at 07:00 GMT. Spanish media reported that the striker suffered a cardiac arrest en route to the hospital and was resuscitated by paramedics. The match was abandoned following the incident.

"Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda," a club statement read. "There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness. We stand with his grieving family, with his loved ones, with all of Tenerife who mourn this cruel loss today."

Both teams' players were visibly distressed by the event. FC Andorra expressed their condolences, stating, "With broken hearts and devastated, we want to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel, to all his team-mates, friends, and to CD Tenerife." Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who co-owns FC Andorra, shared his sorrow, saying, "I am sorry with all my soul. Rest in peace, Jesus."

De Miguel's former club, Castellon, also issued a statement, acknowledging the difficulty of finding words and extending their deepest sympathies. La Liga president Javier Tebas conveyed that "Today, we all share the terrible pain of an irreparable loss," offering his condolences to De Miguel's family, teammates, and the entire club.

Real Madrid and France striker Kylian Mbappe posted on social media, "Much sadness, there are no words." In response to the tragedy, the Spanish football federation announced the postponement of Tuesday's Spanish Cup fixtures.

Jesus de Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year contract. The incident raises questions about player safety in football, particularly concerning high-risk challenges and the immediate medical response protocols during matches.
