Former U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that Ukraine needs a new president who would agree to end the ongoing war with Russia. Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting he has not been effective in resolving the conflict.

Trump's remarks come amidst rising diesel prices in the United States, which he has sought to link to Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil refineries. He asserted that the war should have never started and that it is time for a change in Ukrainian leadership. "I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal," Trump said, adding that Zelenskyy "for some reason [has] never does."

Trump also pointed to the human cost of the war, stating that Ukraine has lost a significant portion of its territory and millions of people have been displaced or killed. He reiterated his belief that as president in 2022, he would have prevented the conflict, attributing its commencement to "incompetence."

These comments followed a deal Trump announced on Friday to procure diesel from Russia, a move that appeared to contradict years of U.S. policy pressuring Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine. Trump indicated that Russia would supply substantial amounts of diesel to the U.S. ahead of midterm elections, aiming to lower domestic fuel costs.

Ukraine's foreign minister, Andriy Sybiga, defended President Zelenskyy following Trump's statements. Sybiga asserted that Zelenskyy has the support of the Ukrainian people, who have the right to choose their leader. He also suggested that external comments validate Zelenskyy's effectiveness in his role and that he deserves support.

The war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year since Russia's full-scale invasion, continues with long-range aerial exchanges and largely stalemated ground forces. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian strikes in the Zaporizhzhia region killed at least 20 people shortly before Trump's statements. Ukraine has been struggling to counter escalating Russian bombardments, which have resulted in numerous casualties in recent days.

Trump's focus on the war's impact on U.S. energy prices and his proposed solution through direct dealings with Russia highlights a divergence from established U.S. foreign policy regarding the conflict. His criticism of Zelenskyy and call for a new Ukrainian leader underscore his distinct approach to international relations and conflict resolution.

The situation remains complex, with Ukraine continuing its defense against Russian aggression while international dynamics, including energy markets and political rhetoric, play a significant role in the ongoing narrative of the war.
