The United States military has carried out a series of strikes targeting Iranian military and surveillance sites near the Strait of Hormuz, according to US Central Command (Centcom). This action comes in direct retaliation for the downing of an American Apache helicopter on Monday.

The incident marks a significant escalation between the two nations, occurring in a region vital for global shipping. The Strait of Hormuz has been a focal point of recent tensions, with the US having previously launched strikes against Iran.

Centcom stated that air defense systems, ground control stations, and radar sites were among the targets of the US strikes. In a swift response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it had launched strikes on 21 targets at US bases, specifically mentioning locations in Bahrain and Jordan. Kuwait's army also reported intercepting an attack.

US officials characterized their strikes as a proportional response to the helicopter incident. However, the IRGC condemned the attacks as "vicious." The downing of the helicopter, which was reportedly on patrol, saw its two crew members rescued by an American sea drone. US officials indicated that a drone was used by Iran in the attack, though it remains unclear if the drone's actions were deliberate.

Iran has not officially claimed responsibility for downing the US helicopter, according to reports from the semi-official Mehr News Agency. President Donald Trump had previously accused Iran of the act, stating that the US "must, of necessity respond."

The IRGC reported that US strikes had damaged a telecommunications tower and two water tanks, and that cities like Jask, Sirik, and the island of Qeshm were targeted. US officials have not yet commented on the alleged attacks on their bases or confirmed any damage.

Jordan's military confirmed it had shot down five missiles fired from Iran, while Bahraini authorities reported repelling Iranian attacks. Iran's Foreign Minister issued a statement indicating that the country "will leave no attack or threat unanswered," despite what he described as the US testing Iran's determination.

This exchange of fire underscores the volatile geopolitical situation in the Middle East, with both sides accusing the other of aggression. The full extent of damage and casualties from these retaliatory strikes remains unclear, as does the potential for further escalation.
