The United Arab Emirates announced on Monday that its air force intercepted a drone originating from Iran and approaching its territorial waters. This action followed a night of renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.

The UAE's Ministry of Defence released a statement on X, formerly Twitter, to deny reports circulating on social media that claimed an attack had occurred on its Al Menhad airbase. The ministry described these reports as "false" and urged the public to rely solely on official sources for accurate information, cautioning against the spread of rumors.

Iranian state media, citing the Iranian army, had reported earlier that dozens of drones were launched towards US military assets at the Al Menhad airbase in the UAE. This alleged attack was presented by Iran as retaliation for US strikes. The UAE's confirmation of intercepting an Iranian drone comes after these conflicting reports.

The incident occurred after US forces conducted strikes on Sunday against two Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island. A US official stated these launchers were located approximately 660 kilometers (410 miles) east of Kharg Island. In response, Iran reportedly targeted two bases utilized by US forces in Jordan and the UAE's Al Menhad airbase, according to Iranian media.

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the strikes in Jordan were aimed at bases used to support the attack on Larak Island. The Iranian army further stated that its drone attack on the UAE airbase was in response to casualties sustained during the Larak operation, targeting sites where US forces and helicopters were stationed.

This exchange marks a resurgence of violence after a period of relative calm. Iran has launched numerous attacks on Gulf countries since the US and Israel initiated their war on Iran in late February. However, a potential de-escalation was signaled on August 1 when US President Donald Trump announced a halt to new strikes on Iran, following appeals from Gulf allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Anwar Mohammed Gargash, a presidential advisor in the UAE, condemned the renewed escalation, characterizing the policy of targeting Arab Gulf states and Jordan as "a failure." He emphasized the need for political solutions, de-escalation, and the restoration of normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The resumption of hostilities comes amid intensified efforts by mediators to restart stalled negotiations, which have been further complicated by the Trump administration's recent imposition of additional economic sanctions on Iran and its business partners.
