At least 11 people were killed and dozens injured in escalating attacks across Ukraine and Russia, officials from both nations reported Friday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that six people died in a Russian missile strike in the Kyiv region, while Ukrainian attacks on Russia's Kirov region resulted in six fatalities and 26 injuries.

The Kyiv region attack, which occurred during daylight hours, saw emergency services working at the site of the missile strikes. In a separate incident, five people were killed and nine injured when Moscow dropped two aviation bombs on the city of Sloviansk, according to Vadym Filashkin, the governor of the city. Filashkin noted that Russian attacks on Sloviansk have resulted in numerous casualties for two consecutive days, urging those near the front line to evacuate.

Al Jazeera's Audrey MacAlpine, reporting from Kyiv, described the daytime ballistic missile attacks as "something new," indicating a potential shift in Russian tactics. "These ballistic threats on cities around Ukraine have been escalating over the summer and show no signs of slowing down," MacAlpine stated. In the southern Mykolaiv region, a Russian drone attack targeted port infrastructure, damaging two civilian vessels but causing no injuries, according to acting regional governor Heorhii Reshetilov.

Russia claimed to have captured the villages of Zakharivka and Ivashchyne in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region and reported striking 27 vessels used by the Ukrainian military in the past week. Meanwhile, in Russia's Kirov region, a Ukrainian missile strike hit a factory, killing six and injuring 26. A warehouse belonging to the Russian e-commerce company Wildberries was also targeted in this attack, continuing a pattern of Ukrainian strikes on the retail giant's facilities.

There are indications that further large-scale attacks could be imminent. "We’re getting reports from certain Telegram channels and officials that another massive attack could be imminent in the coming several days," MacAlpine reported. This suggests a continued intensification of the conflict, with both sides employing increasingly destructive tactics against civilian and military targets.
