United States Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has arrived in St Petersburg for crucial talks with Russian leaders regarding the ongoing Ukraine war. His visit follows what U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described as "positive" discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Norway.

Witkoff is scheduled to meet President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday in the northwestern Russian city. This diplomatic engagement comes as the United States intensifies efforts to broker an end to the conflict, which has persisted for over four and a half years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Secretary of State Rubio indicated that Witkoff would convey the outcomes of his discussions with Zelenskyy to the Russian side. "He’ll now, armed with those ideas, be able to go to St Petersburg and share them with the Russian side – and let’s see if we can make some progress," Rubio stated. U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who participated in the talks with Zelenskyy virtually due to illness, is also expected to join the meeting with Putin remotely.

The diplomatic overtures occur against a backdrop of escalating tensions and ongoing hostilities. The United States is actively seeking pathways to de-escalate the conflict, with Witkoff’s meetings representing a key part of these intensified diplomatic maneuvers.

The talks in Oslo, Norway, were attended by the prime ministers of Norway and Finland, alongside representatives from the European Union and NATO. These international participants underscore the broad concern and engagement surrounding the conflict.

Following the discussions in Oslo, President Zelenskyy reported that "very, very important" intelligence from the U.S. had been restored. This development addresses previous concerns raised by Ukraine regarding intelligence sharing and internet services crucial for battlefield operations.

Zelenskyy had previously accused Washington of slowing down Starshield, a military-grade internet service developed by SpaceX, which is vital for Ukraine's military. Secretary Rubio, however, dismissed these accusations, stating that President Trump had no involvement in decisions made by Starlink and Starshield. Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, has disputed this, suggesting such decisions are contingent on the U.S. military and president.

Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine continue to engage in long-range attacks. Reports indicate at least one fatality and two injuries in a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia's western Bryansk region on Wednesday, highlighting the persistent nature of the conflict despite diplomatic efforts.
