A current and a former Utah sheriff have been charged with obstruction of justice in connection with the high-profile Kouri Richins murder case, according to newly unsealed court filings. Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby faces one count of obstruction of justice and one count of making a false statement. Former Summit County Sheriff David Edmunds is charged with obstruction of justice.

The charges against Rigby and Edmunds are linked to the prosecution of Kouri Richins, who was found guilty in March of fatally poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with fentanyl. The case garnered national attention throughout its lengthy investigation and subsequent trial in Summit County.

According to court documents, Rigby is accused of presenting or using a false item with the intent to hinder a prosecution, stemming from an anonymous letter postmarked January 10, 2026. Edmunds is alleged to have provided false information on March 13 with the intent to hinder an investigation, specifically related to the anonymous letter and alleged misconduct by a Summit County sheriff's deputy.

Both men have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Rigby has previously stated that his actions were lawful. The indictments, filed last month, were unsealed Wednesday with significant redactions. ABC News has reached out to their attorneys and the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office for comment.

Kouri Richins was convicted of murdering her husband, a crime that occurred in 2022. The 36-year-old mother of three, who authored a children's book about grief, was sentenced to life without parole by Judge Richard Mrazik. She is currently seeking a new criminal trial.

The anonymous letter mentioned in the indictments is central to the charges against both Rigby and Edmunds, though its contents and origins remain largely unspecified in the unsealed filings. Edmunds' indictment reportedly connects the letter to alleged misconduct by a Summit County sheriff's deputy.

Rigby's indictment alleges interference in the Richins case specifically over this anonymous letter. The filings indicate that Edmunds is accused of making a false statement intended to obscure the identity of the letter's author.

The case against Kouri Richins culminated in a weekslong trial, with a Summit County jury finding her guilty. The subsequent sentencing hearing, where she received a life sentence, also involved statements from her children. The current legal proceedings involving Rigby and Edmunds add another layer to the ongoing saga surrounding the Richins case.
