Top-seeded Alexander Zverev narrowly avoided an early exit from the US Open, advancing to the third round after a grueling five-set match against Quentin Halys on Thursday. Zverev's victory came amidst a day of significant upsets in the men's singles draw, which saw multiple highly-ranked players eliminated.

The German player, a contender for his first US Open title, struggled for over four hours on Arthur Ashe Stadium, ultimately defeating the 52nd-ranked Frenchman Halys with a scoreline of 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-7 (3/7), 6-3. This followed a similarly demanding five-set opening-round match.

"The performance was quite s*** to be honest, but I won, that’s the most important thing," Zverev admitted after the match. He acknowledged winning "ugly" but expressed pride in his physical resilience, despite hoping his tennis game would improve.

Zverev's survival contrasted sharply with the exits of several seeded players. Third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was defeated by Karen Khachanov, citing dizziness and vision problems during his match. Sixth seed Alex de Minaur also fell to Botic van de Zandschulp, and 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti was upset by Australian qualifier Dane Sweeny.

Khachanov, who defeated Auger-Aliassime, capitalized on his opponent's struggles, noting that physical issues are a part of the sport. He expressed his commitment to fighting hard in his own performance.

Van de Zandschulp's victory over de Minaur was not his first major upset at Flushing Meadows, having previously defeated Carlos Alcaraz. Sweeny's win over Musetti marked his first appearance in the third round of a Grand Slam tournament.

In contrast to the men's draw, top women contenders largely advanced. Reigning Grand Slam champions Elena Rybakina and Mirra Andreeva secured their spots in the third round, as did former champions Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek. Naomi Osaka also progressed, overcoming a mid-match challenge.

Zverev's continued presence in the tournament, despite his struggles, highlights his determination, while the numerous upsets suggest a highly unpredictable men's singles competition this year.
